Papaya

History:
Papaya, botanically known as Carica papaya, originates from the tropical regions of Central and South America, but is also widely grown in the Canary Islands. The history of papaya dates back to ancient America, where indigenous tribes used it not only as food, but also as a medicinal plant. Its leaves, fruits and seeds are used. Papaya leaves contain the splitting enzyme papein, which is used to naturally tenderize meat. The pulp also contains this enzyme, which is why its consumption is suitable for problems with metabolism, as it helps to improve digestion and is ideal for dieting, because papain breaks down fats. Papaya seeds have historically been used as a contraceptive. With their higher consumption (more than 7 balls per day), the risk of miscarriage increases greatly, therefore pregnant women should not consume them. The seeds are also used as a substitute for pepper. After drying, they can be placed in a grinder and when crushed, an intense, slightly spicy flavor is released.

Origin and cultivation:
Papaya is a tropical plant that is mainly grown in warm and humid climates such as the Canary Islands. Papayas require well-drained soil and plenty of sunlight for optimal growth. The Canary Islands provide ideal climatic conditions for growing papayas with their warm and slightly humid climate. The plant looks and grows very much like a palm tree, which is why its green fruits are often mistaken for coconuts.

Uses of Papaya:
Papaya flesh is popular for its sweet taste and smooth consistency. It can be eaten fresh, added to fruit salads, smoothies, or used as an ingredient in desserts. Papaya is eaten at all stages of maturity. Green has uses similar to zucchini. A ripe one contains more sugar and is therefore used as a fruit.
Papaya seeds are also eaten and have a slightly spicy taste. They can be added to salads, muesli, or used as a substitute for pepper.
Papaya extract is often used in cosmetic products due to its moisturizing properties and ability to exfoliate the skin.

Storage and proper processing:
Ripe papayas can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3-5 days. Unripe fruits can be left to ripen at room temperature.
To eat papaya, peel, remove seeds and cut into slices or cubes.

Possible side effects:
Papaya is generally considered a safe food, but some people may experience allergic reactions to the latex contained in the pulp and seeds. It is important to be careful if you have a latex allergy.

Recipes:

Fresh Papaya Salad:
- Dice the fresh papaya.
- Add chopped papaya to a bowl and add chopped fresh kiwi, mango and banana.
- Sprinkle with coconut flakes and cover with lime juice.

Papaya Smoothie:
- Mix fresh papaya, banana, yogurt, honey and a little cinnamon in a blender.
- Blend until smooth and serve immediately.

Papaya from the Canary Islands is not only a delicious fruit with many uses, but also brings the history and richness of the exotic tropical fruit to every meal. Enjoy it as part of a healthy and balanced diet or as an ingredient in your favorite recipes!
